Sobre o Roteiro

Juatinga Essentials is a trekking experience along Brazil’s Green Coast, combining mountains, rainforest, secluded beaches and close contact with traditional caiçara communities. The package begins at Barra Funda Station in São Paulo, where we will board private transport to Paraty. Throughout the six-day journey, our team will take care of all scheduled road and boat transfers, accommodation, meals and guided hikes.

Our first major attraction will be Saco do Mamanguá, a spectacular tropical fjord-like inlet surrounded by the mountains of the Atlantic Forest. After travelling by boat to Praia do Cruzeiro, we will climb Mamanguá Sugarloaf Peak. Although the trail is relatively short, it is very steep and gains approximately 425m of elevation, leading to one of the most impressive viewpoints on Brazil’s Green Coast.

The journey continues through the beaches and communities of Cajaíba Bay. We will hike through places such as Itaoca, Pouso da Cajaíba, Martim de Sá, Cairuçu das Pedras and Ponta Negra, alternating between rainforest trails, beaches, rocky coastal sections, climbs and descents. Our three nights inside the reserve will be spent in simple local homes or caiçara guesthouses, offering an authentic insight into the culture and way of life of these traditional coastal communities.

Our final hiking day will be dedicated to Saco Bravo Waterfall, where water flowing from the rainforest forms a natural pool on the rocky coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Access depends on sea conditions and must be undertaken with a guide or local leader accredited by Inea. The itinerary does not require any technical mountaineering experience, but participants must be physically prepared for four consecutive days of hiking over uneven terrain, in hot and humid conditions and with some steep climbs.

Itinerário

Juatinga Traverse – 6 days

FULL PACKAGE: São Paulo → Paraty → Saco do Mamanguá → Mamanguá Sugarloaf Peak → Pouso da Cajaíba → Martim de Sá → Cairuçu das Pedras → Ponta Negra → Saco Bravo Waterfall → Ponta Negra → Paraty → São Paulo

Day 1 – São Paulo → Paraty

Meeting at Barra Funda Station in São Paulo, where we will board a private van to Paraty, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state. The journey normally takes between 5 and 6 hours, depending on traffic and the stops made along the way. Upon arrival, we will check in at our accommodation, introduce the group and meet the guides for a briefing covering the itinerary, expected conditions and personal equipment. Dinner will be at your own expense in Paraty. Included: private transport from São Paulo to Paraty and shared accommodation.

Day 2 – Paraty → Saco do Mamanguá → Mamanguá Sugarloaf Peak → Pouso da Cajaíba

We will leave Paraty early and travel towards Vila Oratório. From there, local transport will take us to Paraty-Mirim, where we will board a private boat to Praia do Cruzeiro in Saco do Mamanguá. We will then climb Mamanguá Sugarloaf Peak on a hike of approximately 3km return, gaining around 425m of elevation over some very steep sections. From the summit, we will enjoy panoramic views across Mamanguá and its beaches, islands and surrounding mountains. After descending, we will continue by boat to Praia Grande da Cajaíba. From there, we will hike through the beaches and communities of the region until we reach Pouso da Cajaíba, passing through areas of Atlantic Forest and small caiçara settlements. We expect to arrive during the afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in a local home or caiçara guesthouse. The approximate hiking distance for the day is 7km. Included: breakfast, trail snack, road and boat transport, guides, dinner and accommodation.

Day 3 – Pouso da Cajaíba → Martim de Sá → Cairuçu das Pedras

After breakfast, we will begin hiking towards Martim de Sá Beach. There will be time to rest and enjoy one of the best-known beaches in the Juatinga Reserve before continuing along the coastal trail to Cairuçu das Pedras. The route crosses rainforest, hillsides and sections of beach, with a succession of climbs and descents. The approximate hiking distance is 9km. In the late afternoon, we will reach the community of Cairuçu das Pedras, where we will stay in traditional caiçara accommodation. Access to the beach and sea will depend on the conditions assessed by the guides. Included: breakfast, trail snack, guides, dinner and accommodation.

Day 4 – Cairuçu das Pedras → Ponta Negra

After breakfast, we will leave Cairuçu das Pedras and continue towards Ponta Negra. Although the distance is approximately 7km, this is one of the most physically demanding sections of the itinerary, with a long climb, uneven terrain and considerable cumulative elevation gain. We expect to reach Ponta Negra in the early or mid-afternoon. The rest of the day will be free to relax, explore the community and enjoy the beach. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided in a local home or caiçara guesthouse. Included: breakfast, trail snack, guides, dinner and accommodation.

Day 5 – Ponta Negra → Saco Bravo Waterfall → Ponta Negra → Paraty

We will have an early breakfast before beginning the hike to Saco Bravo Waterfall. The return route is approximately 8.4km and normally requires up to 6 hours of activity. The trail includes climbs, descents, roots, rocks and sections that may become slippery. At Saco Bravo Waterfall, access to the rocky coastline and natural pool will depend on sea conditions, water volume and the guides’ assessment. After the visit, we will return to Ponta Negra for lunch. During the afternoon, we will board a private boat to Laranjeiras or Vila Oratório and then continue by road to Paraty. Upon arrival, we will check in at our accommodation. Dinner will be at your own expense. Included: breakfast, trail snack, an accredited guide or local leader for Saco Bravo, lunch, boat transport, road transport and accommodation in Paraty.

Day 6 – Paraty → São Paulo

After breakfast, we will begin the return journey by private van to Barra Funda Station in São Paulo. We will stop for lunch along the way, which is not included in the package. Our arrival time may vary depending on traffic, road conditions and any operational changes to the previous day’s boat journey. Included: breakfast and private transport from Paraty to São Paulo.

IMPORTANT NOTE: all timings, boarding locations and the order of activities are operational estimates. The itinerary may be modified by the guides due to weather, trail conditions, sea conditions, boat availability, Juatinga Reserve regulations or the pace of the group. Safety will always take priority over completing the entire programme exactly as described.

Perguntas
Frequentes

Aqui estão as dúvidas mais frequentes
específico sobre esse roteiro.

I will not be leaving from São Paulo. Do I get a discount if I do not use the van?

Yes. We can adjust the price if you meet the group directly in Paraty and do not use the transport departing from São Paulo. Please contact our team before booking so that we can confirm the discount, meeting time and meeting point.

What level of experience do I need to participate?

No technical mountaineering or climbing experience is required. However, you should already be accustomed to walking and prepared for four consecutive days of activity. The route includes steep climbs, uneven terrain, roots, rocks, mud, heat and humidity. You do not need to be an athlete, but this is not an easy sightseeing walk.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag or sleeping mat?

No. This itinerary does not involve camping. During the traverse, we will stay in simple guesthouses and in the homes of residents from the caiçara communities. You will therefore not need to bring a tent, sleeping bag or sleeping mat.

Do I need to carry all my luggage during the traverse?

No. Your main luggage can remain safely stored in Paraty. During the four hiking days, each participant will only need to carry a backpack containing the clothes, water and personal items required for the three nights in the communities. Each participant must carry their own backpack, as porter service is not included.

What is the accommodation like during the traverse?

We will stay in simple guesthouses and in the homes of residents from the caiçara communities. Accommodation normally consists of shared bedrooms and bathrooms. The facilities are comfortable within the local context, but should not be compared with those of an urban hotel. Electricity, internet access and hot water may vary between communities.

I do not want to share a room. Is a private room available?

Yes, we can request private rooms, but availability will depend on each guesthouse and the homes used in the communities. An additional charge may apply. Please speak to our team before booking so that we can check the available options and prices for each night.

I have dietary restrictions. Is that a problem?

We can easily accommodate both vegetarian and non-vegetarian participants. If you are vegan or have allergies, intolerances or other specific dietary requirements, please speak to our team before booking. Meals are prepared within the communities, where the availability of ingredients is more limited than in a city.

Is drinking water available during the hikes?

Yes. There are rivers, natural springs and water refill points in the communities. Whenever we collect water during a hike, our team will have suitable means of treating it before consumption. Nevertheless, each participant must carry containers with a total capacity of approximately 2 litres and begin each activity with the amount of water recommended by the guides.

What happens if it rains during the trip?

The Juatinga Reserve is a very humid region with high annual rainfall. Participants must therefore be prepared to hike in rain, sunshine, heat and rapidly changing weather. Normal rain does not automatically result in an activity being cancelled. The itinerary will only be interrupted or modified in the event of dangerous or unusual conditions, such as severe storms, rough seas, strong winds, flooding, landslide risk or official warnings issued by the authorities.

Is the visit to Saco Bravo Waterfall guaranteed?

The hike will take place whenever conditions are safe. However, access to the rocky coastline and natural pool depends on sea conditions, the water volume at the waterfall and the assessment of the accredited guide or local leader. In the event of rough seas or another dangerous condition, we may view the waterfall from a safe area or modify the activity.

What insurance should I take out?

The itinerary includes personal accident insurance during the scheduled activities. Nevertheless, we recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses, outdoor activities, cancellation, baggage and possible changes to your journey. Before purchasing a policy, confirm that it specifically covers trekking.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Knowing how to swim is not compulsory for participating in the hikes. All boat journeys will be made in vessels equipped with life jackets. Participants who cannot swim must inform the team and follow the guides’ instructions before entering the sea, rivers or natural pools.

Do you offer discounts for groups?

Yes. We can offer special conditions for groups, depending on the number of participants and the selected departure date. Contact our team before booking and let us know how many people will be travelling so that we can prepare an adjusted proposal.

Is there mobile phone coverage or internet access during the traverse?

Mobile phone coverage is unreliable or completely unavailable along much of the route. Some communities may offer limited internet access, but participants should expect to spend long periods without mobile phone or internet service.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. Timings, trails, boarding locations and the order of activities may be changed due to weather, sea conditions, trail conditions, boat availability, Juatinga Reserve regulations or the pace of the group. Any changes will be made with the aim of preserving the group’s safety and providing the best possible experience.
